On 3 May 1933, Imants Ziedonis was born into a fisherman’s family at “Birutas” in Ragaciems, Sloka parish – a poet, prose writer, publicist, and public figure who became one of the strongest voices in Latvian literature of the second half of the 20th century. His epiphanies, “Coloured Tales,” and travel writings expanded the language of Latvian prose and poetry, while during the Awakening Ziedonis also entered politics—as a Supreme Council deputy he voted for the restoration of Latvia’s independence.
Ziedonis’s creative life developed under Soviet occupation, when literature often became a space for indirect freedom and self-awareness. In his work, motifs of nature, language, and national memory were joined with active public engagement, which became especially significant during the Third Awakening.
