On 12 April 1883, Kārlis Oskars Kundziņš was born at the Smiltene parsonage – a Latvian theologian, philosopher, educator and later professor at the University of Latvia. He helped build the Latvian Higher School, was one of the authors of the University of Latvia’s constitution, repeatedly led the Faculty of Theology, and in 1944 signed the Latvian Central Council memorandum. In exile, Kundziņš continued serving Latvian congregations and from 1962 to 1966 was archbishop of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in exile.
Kundziņš’s life connects several turning points in 20th-century Latvian history – the creation of a national university, occupation, a resistance memorandum, and church life in exile. His work shows how academic, religious, and civic responsibility often overlapped in Latvian history.
