On 13 May 1832, Juris Alunāns – whose real name was Gustavs Georgs Frīdrihs Alunāns – was born at Jaunkalsnava Manor. He became one of the most striking Young Latvians: a poet, publicist, and linguist who raised the Latvian language as the cultural foundation of a modern nation. Through “Dziesmiņas” and his linguistic work, Alunāns expanded the possibilities of the literary language, introduced about 500 neologisms, and proved that Latvian could be used to write about science, society, and the wider world.
Alunāns’s generation worked at a time when Baltic German cultural dominance still shaped education and public life. The Young Latvian movement – including Alunāns’s language reforms – helped Latvians move from a self-image as a peasant estate toward the consciousness of a modern nation.
