On 19 May 1939, Jānis Lūsis was born in Jelgava – a Latvian javelin thrower whose career later became one of the brightest stories in Latvian sport. He competed in four Olympic Games, winning gold in Mexico City in 1968, silver in Munich in 1972, and bronze in Tokyo in 1964. Lūsis was also a four-time European champion and a two-time world record holder in the javelin throw.
Lūsis’s achievements helped build the legend of the Latvian javelin school and made the discipline one of the most recognizable calling cards of Latvian sport. His career vividly shows how Latvian athletes reached international excellence even within the Soviet sports system.
