On 20 May 1920, the first graduation of the Latvian War School took place on Riga’s Esplanade – a young state whose regiments were still fighting in Latgale received its first officers trained at home. Sources state that diplomas were awarded to 233 infantry officers and 67 artillery officers. It was a symbolic moment at the close of the War of Independence – from battle-tested cadets, a professional generation of Latvian army officers began to emerge.
The Latvian War School was created during the War of Independence, when the army urgently needed trained commanders. Its first graduation marked the transition from emergency mobilization during the freedom struggle to the building of a permanent national army.
