Riga’s morning was still dark when, on 3 November 1919, the Latvian Army began the operation to liberate Pārdaugava from the Bolderāja–Daugavgrīva bridgehead. After Allied naval artillery fire, the Vidzeme and Latgale divisions moved against Bermontian positions in the dune belt between Bolderāja and Vārnukrogs; the first infantry assault was repelled, but around 10:30 the defence was broken. It was the opening of the road to 11 November, when Riga was again in Latvian hands.
The Bermontian campaign was one of the decisive phases of the Latvian War of Independence. In October Riga had been split along the Daugava, but the attack of 3 November turned defence into counteroffensive and opened the liberation of the city.
