Art
Porcelain is not only a cup in a display case—it is also an archive of Riga’s factories, designers, and everyday tables. On 30 October 2001, the Riga Porcelain Museum opened in Old Riga, in Konventa sēta, at Kalēju Street 9/11, gathering that fragile memory in one place. The core of its collection came from the Riga Porcelain Factory museum—nearly seven thousand faience and porcelain objects from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century.
Porcelain production in Riga was an important part of the city’s industry and applied arts. The museum’s opening in 2001 helped preserve the factory legacy at a time when Soviet-era industrial structures had already fallen apart.
