In 1919, on 13 June in Cēsis, during the armistice phase of the Battle of Cēsis, the Allied mission proposed new terms – halting offensives, restoring destroyed communications, and handing the Valka–Ieriķi–Vecgulbene–Jēkabpils railway to the Estonian army. Baltic Landeswehr commander Alfred Fletcher asked for more time, but that same evening Rüdiger von der Goltz rejected Hubert Gough’s ultimatum demanding the withdrawal and partial evacuation of German forces. This opened the way to the decisive phase of the Battle of Cēsis.
The Battle of Cēsis was one of the most important turning points in the Latvian War of Independence. The victory of the Estonian army and the North Latvian Brigade undermined the Baltic German and German forces’ attempt to strengthen the Niedra government and helped restore the position of Kārlis Ulmanis’s Provisional Government.
