On 24 May 1892, at “Kalāči” in Mūrmuiža, Eduards Veidenbaums died at only 24 — a poet whose sharp social irony and existential tension became one of the starting points of modern Latvian poetry. During his lifetime, his poems circulated mainly in manuscript copies; wider recognition began only after his death, when “Dienas Lapa” published an obituary and later his poetry. Shortly before his death, news reached Kalāči that he had received a prize for a work popularizing science.
