On 25 May 2007, Emperor Akihito of Japan and Empress Michiko arrived in Riga on the first state visit by a Japanese emperor in Latvia’s history. They were received at Riga Castle by President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga; afterward the emperor and the president laid flowers at the Freedom Monument and visited the Museum of the Occupation and the University of Latvia. The visit was a historic moment not only for Latvia but for the entire Baltic region.
