On the Saeima agenda it was only one third-reading vote, but for Sēlija it gave the region an official face. On 28 September 2023, MPs voted 74 in favour, with none against or abstaining, to adopt amendments to the coats-of-arms law, adding the fifth Latvian historical land. The new Section 5.1 described Sēlija’s coat of arms precisely: in a red field, a silver stag walking in the opposite direction, a design created by Edgars Sims in 2022.
The Law on Latvian Historical Lands, in force from 1 July 2021, established Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale, and Sēlija as Latvian historical lands. The 2023 amendments to the heraldic law gave Sēlija the legal protection of a state symbol alongside the other regions.
