In the quiet of the Majori summer house, Rainis’s work suddenly stopped. On 12 September 1929 – one day after his 64th birthday – Jānis Pliekšāns died in Jūrmala, in the house that had served him and Aspazija since 1927 as a place for work and summer rest. What remained was not only poems on the table: dozens of planned plays, several collections, aphorisms and translations were unfinished. On 15 September he was buried in Riga’s New Cemetery, later named after Rainis.

Rainis was not only a writer – he was also a member of the Constitutional Assembly and the Saeima, minister of education, and head of the National Theatre. His sudden death in September 1929 ended a life in which Latvian literature, language, and state politics constantly intersected.
